Why the Right Hair Tools Matter – Especially Your Brushes

I hope you are all well and had a good Easter break and happy mother’s day to all you mothers, may you all get a well deserved rest and some pampering time…

A Question I am getting asked regularly at the moment is about tools to manage your hair yourself at home, so here are a few tips I have put together using my own knowledge and experience.

When it comes to looking after your hair at home, one of the most important aspects is having the right tools—and that starts with your brush. It might not sound like a big thing but your brush plays a massive role in your hair’s overall health, shine, and manageability. And just like skincare or gym gear, not all brushes are created equal.

I can’t tell you how often I see beautiful, healthy hair being tugged through old brushes with bent or broken bristles. These tools might seem harmless, but they can cause unnecessary breakage, frizz, and even scalp irritation. If you’ve invested in your colour, cut, or in-salon treatments, the last thing you want is for your brush to undo all that care.

Choosing the right size and shape for your hair type really does make a difference too. If your hair is thick or curly, a small round brush isn’t going to do much besides get stuck halfway through your blow-dry. On the other hand, finer hair often struggles to hold volume with big, heavy brushes that don’t grip properly.

The right brush should work with your hair, not against it. It should glide smoothly, detangle gently, and help you style without stress. If it’s making your morning routine harder, it’s time to upgrade. I always recommend matching your brush to your hair’s texture, thickness, and the style you’re trying to achieve. It’s a small switch that can make a big difference in how your hair looks—and feels—day to day.

Ask me for my product and manufacturing recommendations when you are next in for your hair type, and bring your equipment so I can show you how to use it or recommend changes.

Here’s What I Recommend:

Wet Hair:
Use a Wet Brush, Tangle Teezer or a wide tooth comb  They glide through without snapping fragile, damp hair. Never use a round brush on wet hair!

Curly Hair:
Go for a wide-tooth comb or a Denman brush while your hair’s still wet. It defines curls without frizzing them out.

Straight or Smooth Blowdries:
A ceramic paddle brush or medium round brush is ideal. ghd or Moroccanoil do great ones for smoothness and shape.

Volume:
Need lift? A smaller round ceramic brush helps build root volume.  Y.S park brushes are amazing for bounce without damage. I can order these in to the salon when you are ready to invest.

Dry Hair Finishing:
A natural bristle brush (like Mason Pearson) helps smooth and add shine. Perfect for touch-ups or second-day hair.

Hairdryers & Heat Tools:
Invest in a good dryer with ionic tech—Dyson, ghd , or Parlux are all great. Dyson is my preferred choice as it’s light and quiet to use and their customer service has been outstanding whenever i’ve needed support. Shark is a new kid on the block, clients have told me they are similar to Dyson but with half the price tag so worth checking out. For straightening or curling, use ceramic tools with temp control. Cloud Nine And  ghd, are solid choices. Check the returns / servicing policy and warranties as these vary and are important when making an investment. Remember to always use a heat protector on your hair before you use heat tools and try not to use them too often.

Not sure what’s right for your hair? Bring your brush or tool in next time—we’ll have a look and I’ll guide you to the best option for your hair type and routine. With the right tools, styling becomes smoother, quicker, and a whole lot more enjoyable.

Love as always,

Andrea.
